The workers of Ağaç A.Ş., a subsidiary of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, who are members of the United Agricultural Forestry Workers Union, started a wildcat strike on December 3, 2024 against the usurpation of their vested rights, demanding that the working order in all construction sites should be 5 days work and 2 days off. Workers from Yenikapı, Ümraniye, Gaziosmanpaşa, Pendik, Beykoz, Kartal, Başakşehir, Florya, Küçükyalı, Beyoğlu, Sancaktepe, Sarıyer, Küçükçekmece, Kadıköy and Üsküdar construction sites joined the strike.
The strike ended on December 4, 2024. In the press statement made by the union on behalf of the workers, the union said, “As European side construction sites, we declare that we will continue to use our Saturday leave. As Anatolian side construction sites, we declare that we will use our Saturday leave, which is our right as per the principle of equality.”
Although the practice of 5 days of work and 2 days of rest (5+2) was introduced at the European side construction sites, this practice was not implemented at the Anatolian side construction sites. However, following negotiations between the United Agricultural and Forestry Workers Union, which is authorized in the workplace, and the management of Ağaç A.Ş., the strike ended without any gains when the management announced that the 5+2 practice was canceled in all construction sites.
